Possibly of relevance: I just came across this with Emily Chamlee-Wright on qualitative vs quantitative empirical work.

I guess if you're going to get your masters, you'll probably be learning some quantitative stuff. Qualitative thinking is intuitional.

Did you see this post? It clarifies where I'm coming from on this topic:

Thought you'd be interested in the explicit institutional/memetic game logic here: skip gates and the harvard experience

There is a journal of qualitative social science. No textbook or degree that I'm aware of though:

Good news and bad news, Hopefully Anonymous. Your Google query for "Masters in Qualitative Analysis" (something I would prefer over Quantitative Analysis too), now gets 35 hits. As of October 2011. Unfortunately, most of them are references to your two posts on the subject. There was a job opening for a "Qualitative Analyst" at Citibank, which was probably a typo. Sounded like they wanted an algo trader: http://www.freak-search.com/en/thread/2187141/us-ny_new_york-sr_programmeranalyst

Now the good news: There are two companies specializing in qualitative analysis! One is Reflect Research http colon slashslash www dot reflectresearch dot com slash services dot html (I did that TGGP-style!). The other is researchware dot com. I have no idea if they are reputable or not.

However, the gap is narrowing: "Masters in quantitative analysis" only gets 6,240 hits, far from the 69,000 of a few years ago. We're catching up. Perhaps.

Ellie,
Wow, a rare non-bot visitor to my comments.
(And someone with rare literacy of me & TGGP outside of TGGP's regular commenters).

I encourage you to check out my active blog: http://hopefullyanonymous.blogspot.com
