1. I don't know what this means. Daschle was a bad pick, period. Picking Daschle, and being reluctant to dump him in the face of criticism doesn't make Obama superior to the more opportunistic Clinton. It just reveals an unmeritocratic tendency in Obama. If he and his staff don't check it, he'll veer into George W. Bush territory again and again. I was stupid (1) to nomminate Daschle for HHSA (even if no one ever thought it scandalous but me), (2) to expend any capital at all when Daschle became controversial, (3) to have Gibbs defend Obama with lines equivalent to "Daschle will be ethical because Obama says he will be." There is nothing brilliant about Obama finally dumping Daschle. It just showed a lack of disastrous stupidity. If Obama wants to maximize his odds of historic greatness, he should drop the "appoint my friends, appoint my rivals, appoint senators" shtick, and start hunting for the best talent for the jobs, Google-style.
2. Good move by Obama. A sign he gets it.
